25th Hour, back on Norton
Just finished watching 25th Hour, it’s 2:05am and I finished my Twix ages ago.
Really really enjoyed it. The film was also very good. When Ed Norton is talking about shooting a dying dog inside the first five minutes I think about not liking this film, but he took it to hospital instead and made it his dog so all was forgiven.
It’s about a guy called Montgomery Brogan living his last day before serving a seven year prison sentence for drug possession. The constant shadow hanging over everything he does, seeing friends, partying, is that his life as a free man ends very shortly. It’s actually pretty sad.
Plus there’s an awesome dog in it he has to do something with and the way you watch it makes you really feel sorry for the guy, despite the fact he completely deserves to go to prison. Montgomery is a fairly cool name though.
Brian Cox is a great actor so I like him being in it, and I haven’t seen Barry Pepper in anything since Saving Private Ryan, so that was nice. Anna Paquin annoys me somewhat but she’s not a huge character in this so it’s not so bad.
Another film down, another something different. Don’t really know what else to say about it, says the guy who would like to write for Empire.
Oh, the score wasn’t up to much. In one scene in particular, which should have been very moving, it was too loud and distracting, and took away some of the emotion of the scene. The rest of the film was good though.
The end was also really sad, but kind of hopeful. As he is being driven to prison by his dad, it goes one way then the other and leaves you wondering what happens to them, without wanting to spoil too much.
It felt like it was going to be a feel good film in the end, but it turned out to be quite emotional. I liked it lots, another winner for my list, hooray!
Only seven more Ed Norton films til I’ve seen them all, and he doesn’t have another one scheduled for release until next year, so maybe I’ll have to find someone new to fill that time. Or maybe I’ll get cracking on the other 71 films on my watchlist, or the rest of the Top 250. The possibilities of a man with too much spare time on his hands.
